3D Systems has unveiled its 'kitchen-ready' 3D printer series at CES 2014, able to output stylised, edible prints. Named the ChefJet 3D series, the machines are available in two versions: the monochrome, counter-top ChefJet and the large-format, full-colour ChefJet Pro.
The ChefJet can print food up to 20 x 20 x 15cm (8 x 8 x 6") in volume and is designed primarily for confections and cake toppings of a single colour, while the ChefJet Pro boasts a build volume of 25 x 35 x 20cm (10 x 14 x 8") and can print in a range of colours and flavours, including mint, vanilla, chocolate and watermelon. Both are expected to become commercially available in the latter part of 2014, with the ChefJet to be priced below $5,000 (£3,050) and the ChefJet Pro in the sub-$10,000 (£6,090).
"Food is an incredible platform for creativity, experimentation, and celebration and we are thrilled to place these powerful 3D printers in bakers' and chefs' kitchens," states Liz von Hasseln, creative director of food products at 3D Systems. "We invite leading pastry chefs, restaurateurs and event planners to join us in bringing 3D printing into the kitchen."
