Project Ara aims to create fully customisable smartphones

3D Systems is investigating the use of conductive ink for circuitry as part of its link-up with Google's Project Ara, which looks to create a smartphone that can be enhanced with 3D-printed parts.

The device's concept is based around a basic exoskeleton which can be fitted with a number of modules. These can be swapped out by the user and include increased memory, replacement batteries and camera upgrades.

In a post outlining its recent developments, 3D Systems revealed that it has been working with Carnegie Mellon University to develop the ink, which will be used for functional components, including antennae. The modules will be printable in CMYK, white and clear, offering a full set of colour options.

"The combination of exponential creation technology with exponential information technology translates to unprecedented capability and adaptability for the consumer," suggests Chuck Hull, founder and chief technology officer of 3D Systems. "The scale of this project and its practical functionality are an exciting step into the future."
