The miniature Monet measures at 300 microns, around three times the width of the strand of human hairResearchers at the University of Technology and Design in Singapore (SUTD) have recreated Monet's Sunrise painting using a new printing technique with plasmonics.
The reproduction measures at 300 by 250 microns – around three times the width of the strand of human hair. The no-ink method utilises aluminium nano-disks and light reflective technology to produce colour on microscopic pillars. The colours are then exported into an electron-beam lithography system and configured onto a surface.
Researchers are still exploring the potential applications of this type of printing for high-resolution digital printing, data storage and identifying counterfeit materials.
